Three Waves of the Wearable Tech Transformation

The wearable tech market has gone from Dick Tracy’s science fiction in 1946 to a $178 Billion market in 2024 that is poised to reshape human capability.2 As with any technology, the wearable tech market is continuously shifting as new products replace incumbents. Currently, earwear and smartwatches dominate the market and represent the first wave of the wearable tech revolution.3 Under the surface of today’s market, smartwatches are contracting and being replaced by human augmentation devices. In the near to mid-term future, technologies such as augmented reality glasses, temperature reducing clothing, and FDA approved monitoring devices will represent the second wave of the revolution and continue to gain market share. In the long-term future, technology that is currently relegated to the realm of science fiction such as exoskeletons and brain-computer interfaces represent the third wave of the revolution and will power the future of wearable tech. The wearable tech market exhibits a technological revolution that will continue to grow rapidly and power humanity to new heights.

Wave 1: The Quantified Self Era

The first wave of the wearable tech revolution is represented by the era of the quantified self. The quantified self wave became mainstream in 2009 with the release of the Fitbit which suddenly allowed consumers to quantify step counts, distance traveled, calories burned, sleep quality and more.4 The Apple Watch has since come to dominate the wrist-wear market as a multi-faceted platform that can do everything the Fitbit could do plus make phone calls, use Apple Pay, talk to Siri, download apps, measure vitals, and connect to emergency services via satellite if necessary.3, 5 Through being the go-to platform with a strong network effect, Apple Watches currently hold a 24.8% market share in wearable tech wristwear. Powered by the quantified self era of the wearable tech revolution, global wearables reached 534.6 million units sold in 2024 with 5.4% growth, but signs of market maturation have emerged. In 2025, growth is set to slow with smartwatches contracting 4.5% due to low-cost competition and users having stocked up on devices during Covid.3 However, while wristwear sales will slow, there will still be estimated 4.1% growth in the overall wearable tech market driven by earwear and new markets taking shape in the second wave of the wearable tech revolution.

Wave 2 - The Augmented Human

The second wave of the wearable tech revolution is represented by the era of the augmented human and will be driven by healthcare wearables, workplace enhancements and safety monitoring. As more wearables achieve FDA-approval for issues such as atrial fibrillation detection and continuous glucose monitoring, healthcare wearables alone are expected to surpass 400 million units sold in 2025.6 Further, workplace enhancement wearables are beginning to contribute meaningfully to growth. For example, cooling hats and sleeves are keeping workers up to 30 degrees cooler, biosensor devices are monitoring sweat loss and dehydration to prevent workplace injuries, earwear is instantly translating conversations, and augmented reality glasses are providing previously impossible capabilities.7 With augmented reality glasses alone, medical researchers can now absorb complex data by virtually stepping into a visualization of molecules and technicians can instantly share visuals with remote experts to get advice and instructions on solving tasks.8 Many of these technologies are in their early innings and will continue to power the next wave of the wearable tech revolution.

Wave 3: The Emerging Cyborg Integration

The third and final wave of the wearable tech revolution will come with the integration between humans and technology. Most of the technology that will power the third wave of the wearable tech revolution is still in the realm of science fiction as today’s Dick Tracy two-way wrist radio. However, some breakthroughs are making the future feel like the present. At Ford and Lowe’s, early model exoskeletons are enabling manufacturing and blue-collar workers to engage in prolonged efforts with less fatigue and more easily lift and move heavy objects through muscle support.11 With the additional capability, workers with exoskeletons are less prone to overexertion, the leading cause of workplace injury that leads to $14 Billion in annual workers compensation costs for businesses. Further, Nike and Under Armour are currently developing sensor embedded clothing that can track and warn against muscle strain and injury. Perhaps most amazingly, brain-computer interfaces are quickly moving from research to clinical trials as the FDA has approved systems for paralyzed patients to control devices with their thoughts.10 Neuralink has already been implanted in multiple paralyzed individuals who can now successfully control a computer with their thoughts.11 While this is the beginning of exoskeletons and brain-computer interfaces, one’s imagination can run wild with the possibilities of super-humans to come. The third wave of the wearable tech revolution will come with the integration between humans and technology and will take humanity to levels that remain in the realm of science fiction today.

The Past, Present, and Future of Wearable Tech

Early forms of wearable tech came with devices such as pocket watches. Today, smart watches and fitness devices would make Dick Tracy look like he lived in the stone ages. In the coming years, human beings will augment all facets of their lives with FDA approved health monitoring devices, augmented reality glasses, and instant translation earwear devices. What the long-term future could look like is beginning to show its face with the early launch of exoskeletons and brain-computer interfaces. On the way to the future, wearable devices will continue to grow in popularity with new devices and functionality. The wearable device revolution will keep rolling, driving humanity to new heights.
